Nyuk ! Nyuk
! What else is there to say? The Three Stooges one of the greatest
20th Century icons. Comedy took a giant leap forward with these guys.
Amazing that after all these years we still remember them and still use
their phrases. Good DVD, and an essential for any serious "Stooge"
collector.
A
Bargain Why do I say this is a bargain? For two reasons. One is
that these same shorts are available on a double DVD offered by Soitenly
Stooges and Knuckleheads, official merchandise from those who own the
rights to the Stooges - and they charge 30 bucks for theirs, even though
all four shorts available can't be more than an hour and fifteen minutes,
so there is no need for a double DVD. There is also a DVD with only two of
these shorts that is a dollar more! The second reason is, these shorts are
in the public domain, and two (Malice in the Palace and Brideless Groom)
have never been available from Columbia TriStar Home Video. Since so many
who call themselves fans restrict their tastes to Curly, these shorts
aren't likely to be released officially any time soon. But I love Shemp
and these shorts are pretty good. If you don't like Shemp, don't buy this
- because I guarantee that the production notes and biographies of the
stars included in this package are bogus and inaccurate!
Well worth
it You can't go wrong on this for eight bucks. One Curly short, but
the three Shemp shorts are good ones. ... Read more

Shemp
Outshines Curly on this one As has been said in previous reviews;
there are five shorts on this DVD, as opposed to the usual six. Also, the
short Three Little Beers has a scene edited out, when AMC shows the short
in its entirety.
Other than that, the short selection on this dvd is one of the better
ones, a step up from the previous release Healthy Wealthy and Dumb. Three
Arabian Nuts (not shown on AMC)is definately the best short, especially
with Beers having that edit. A definate classic, and almost makes you
forget there are only 5 shorts on the DVD. Shemp looks great in the zoot
suit. Three Dark Horses is another great short with the Stooges hired as
wringer delegates; but other than the two Shemps and the edited Beers
there isn't much left. Three Loan Wolves was made when Curly's health was
declining, and it shows in his performance and more of a focus on Larry
(happened again when Shemps health declined); but it is one of the better
"children" shorts. The title short is probably the weakest, but still not
bad. To sum it up, the quality is great, but the quantity is inexcusable.
Good DVD,
some of the Stooges best shorts. This is a great Stooge DVD, but
I'm disappointed that there are only five shorts on this one. There have
been other DVDs with six shorts, and one of them, ALL THE WORLD'S A
STOOGE, had seven shorts. But anyway, the shorts here are great. THREE
ARABIAN NUTS was excellent, worth the price of the DVD alone. THREE LITTLE
BEERS is one of Curly's best shorts. The Stooges make goofy golfers. THREE
SMART SAPS is a nice short. Some of Curly's crazy dances are hilarious.
THREE DARK HORSES is a Stooge classic. Shemp is the best Stooge. THREE
LOAN WOLVES is pretty funny as well. The Stooges have some funny ways of
taking care of children.
This DVD is great, but I hope Columbia is only doing this five-short
thing as a one-time deal. I hope the DVDs go back to seven shorts again.
Disappointed Only five shorts and the deleted golf ball scene.
Sony is taking our money. ... Read more

From the Back Cover The Three Stooges are what slapstick is all
about, and in animated form they take it over the top. Best of all, at the
beginning and end of each cartoon, The Three Stooges--Larry, Moe, and
Curly Joe--appear in person in classic "wraparounds" (cartoon titles
precede live-action wraparounds in parenthesis).
Show #1: That Little Bomb Maker (Soldiers), Woodsmen Bear That Tree
(Lost), Let's Shoot the Piano Player (Campers), Dentist the Menace
(Bakers)
Show #2: Safari So So Good (Orangutan), Thimk or Thwim (Flat Tire),
There Auto Be a Law (Fan Belt), That Old Shell Game (Fishermen)
Show #3: Hold That Line (Dentists), Flycycle Built for Two (Janitors),
Dizzy Doodlers (Artists), The Chicken Delivery Boys (Decorators)
Show #4: Movie Scars (Golfers), A Bull for Andamo (Hunters), The Tree
Nuts (Weighing In), Tin Horn Dude (Telegram).
Great
Picture Quality. A Must For Fans. Rhino's DVD release of "The New
Three Stooges" cartoons from the 1960s is an absolute must for any Stooge
fan.
First of all, this collection contains the first sixteen stooge
cartoons: That Little Old Bomb Maker; Woodsmen Bear That Tree; Let's Shoot
the Piano Player; Dentist the Menace; Safari So Good; Thimk of Thwim;
There Auto Be a Law; That Old Shell Game; Hold That Line; Flycycle Built
For Two; Dizzy Doodlers; The Chicken Delivery Boys; Movie Scars; A Bull
for Andamo; The Tree Nuts; Tin Horn Dude.
These cartoons do not feature the greatest animation in the world (in
fact, the animation makes "Clutch Cargo" look like "Wallace and Gromit"),
but they're a must for Stooge fans. Even better than the cartoons are the
live action wraparounds by Moe, Larry, and Curly Joe DeRita (who were all
looking incredibly old by this point). While the wraparounds are not up
the the standard set by the old Columbia shorts, they're still fairly
amusing and a Stooge fan's dream.
The picture quality of this release is amazing (at least compared to my
muddy old videos). The colour on both the live action and animated
segments is incredible, and they're both mostly free of grain. My only
complaint is that the opening titles sequence is rather blurry.
On the special features front, there's an interview with supervising
producer Lee Orgel, who has some interesting tidbits about the Stooges and
some interesting behind-the-scenes facts.
All in all, if you're a Stooge fan, you NEED this collection of
cartoons.
Finally a
QUALITY co. releases these CARTOONS! Was so glad to find these
cartoons finally released by a top-rate CO.....RHINO! GREAT cover too! I
love these cartoons! Yes they were cheaply done by CAMBRIA and the
live-action sequences were not the STOOGES at their BEST BUT they are fun
and entertaining! Love the intro/closing and the theme song too! Nice
that they also included everything in complete one-hour episodes.
These Should
Be Good Prints I have not seen this DVD, but I can tell you
something about the Three Stooges cartoons. Most of them are not very good
(which accounts for the only two stars rating), but a few have their
moments. For example, in the one where they are explorers in Egypt Moe
makes a quip about his "portable Rosetta Stone". That's pretty witty for
the Three Stooges!
Some fans my age may anticipate these more than others, and for that a
little history is in order. When these 156 cartoons were released in
syndication in 1965, the Columbia two-reelers had been released to
television 6 years befpre. So we young fans were hungry for any new
Stooges product. Not only did the Stooges provide their own voices (unlike
Hanna-Barbera's Laurel and Hardy cartoons circa the same period), but
there were live action wraparound intros to each cartoon. In color!
Recently those live wraparounds have been released without the cartoons
by Good Times, and many ...fans wrote in to say they were horrible. Well,
they ain't great but they were never meant to be viewed without the
cartoons.
I don't know which of the cartoons will be available in this collection
- and if there's a volume one, perhaps there will be a volume 2. And at
the promised 113 minutes, there should be pretty many.
These cartoons were available about 14 years ago on video from Nelson
Entertainment, who released every cartoon - except one! Maybe this
collection will rectify that. ... Read more

The Three
Stooges and the Ventriloquist. I'm going out on a limb with this
review. This is a funny little movie. Paul Winchell and his wise cracking
dummy, Jerry Mahoney, are a hoot. Almost as good is the lovably wacky
Knucklehead Smiff. Notice how lunch counter-man Knuck deals with Winch's
slice of suspicious raisin bread. The spliced in scenes of various Three
Stooges comedies are fun, if somewhat diluted for staunch Stooge fanatics.
Everything moves along nicely. The laughs are frequent. Does anyone really
care that it's all low budget nonsense? Observe as Winch teaches Jerry
appropriate table etiquette, especially the correct method of consuming an
ear of corn. The plumbing segment is also hilarious. First time viewers
beware, about three-quarters along the way, there is a terrible bump in
the road. The Marquis Chimps do Cinderella in hokey costumes. What was the
producer thinking? Even for a cheesy movie freak such as me, this
10-minute interlude is too much schlock. Fast-forward through this
mistake, and preserve your sanity. This little movie is good for nostalgia
buffs, and middle-age kiddies everywhere. From this point forward, you are
on your own. ;-)
Welcome,
but... This film is a hybrid of new non-Stooges material and
classic scenes. It's worth having, but Columbia continues to treat Stooges
fans rather cavalierly.
With the success of the Stooges shorts on TV, it seemed like a good bet
to take clips from the Curly shorts to make a new "feature" (Allied
Artists did likewise with the Little Rascals, making a 'new feature'
called LITTLE RASCALS FOLLIES), and STOP! LOOK! AND LAUGH! was the result.
Popular kids show host, ventriloquist Paul Winchell, ties the clips
together with his sidekicks, Jerry Mahoney and Knucklehead Smiff, and the
climax features the Marquis Chimps, well remembered from their Ed Sullivan
Show stints, performing Cinderella(!!!). Not exactly your typical Stooges
fare, and it's jarring to hear new music dubbed over well-known Stooges
scenes.
As mentioned, it's worth having (hopefully, Columbia will provide a
better transfer than some of their recent Stooges shorts collections).
It's nice of them to include a bonus Stooges short, too, and A BIRD IN THE
HEAD is a pretty good one. Still, this and the weak THE OUTLAWS IS COMING
are the only Stooges features Columbia has yet released on DVD, leaving
the superior THREE STOOGES MEET HERCULES, HAVE ROCKET WILL TRAVEL and THE
THREE STOOGES IN ORBIT in the vault.
It would also be very nice of Columbia to feature bonus shorts from
their catalog, perhaps as easter eggs, on the discs, such as Vera Vague,
Charley Chase, or Andy Clyde.
Excellent
Puppetry I love this movie because I love Paul Winchell and the Art
of Puppetry and ventriliqiolism (ok i can't spell). It is just hilarious.
I wasn't a fan of the Stooges, but this movie made me one. ... Read more
The four
Stooges I say "the four Stooges" because this collection features
Moe,Larry,Curly and Shemp. CACTUS MAKES PERFECT,the only short with
Curly,is where the Stooges hunt for gold with their new invention,a
"goldfinder",which is more like a standard metal dectector. In OUT
WEST,the Stooges go out west primarily for the sake of Shemp's unhealthy
leg. In PUNCHY COWPUNCHERS,the Stooges are sent to the Panhandle country
to capture the Killer Dillons. In MERRY MAVERICKS,the Stooges are wanted
for vagrancy just like in an earlier film with Curly,PHONY EXPRESS. In
VAGABOND LOAFERS,a remake of another Curly short,A-PLUMBING WE WILL GO,the
Stooges as plumbers wreck havoc, and during a couple's party. In DOPEY
DICKS,the Stooges as private eyes, rescue a kidnapped beauty from a
labrotory. Great support from Christine McIntyre who appeared in OW,VL,DD
and PC. Curly was still alive, but terminally ill when his brother Shemp's
shorts were made.
finally,
some hint that's it's a DVD! They finally did something nice for
the DVD opening. There's a short series with still photos and sound
effects that shows the boys "in action". They still should put many more
shorts on one DVD, though. The ones that did make it are funny, of course.
Shemp is a very underrated member of the team.
Great
DVD! This is a great DVD. I don't mind the fact that there are five
Shemp shorts and one Curly short. I like Shemp better.
CACTUS MAKES PERFECT (1942) is not a very great short, and this is it's
third release. This is too slow paced and unfunny for me. I wonder why
Columbia Tristar keeps releasing this one when they could be releasing
some brand new shorts.
OUT WEST (1947) is an excellent short. I personally believe this is the
best Stooge western short. This is quite possibly the best short on this
DVD. I love this short. Highly recommended!
VAGABOND LOAFERS (1949)- I believe this is the strongest and funniest
short on this DVD. I have to say this is my second favorite short next to
HEAVENLY DAZE. This is a remake of Curly's classic A PLUMBING WE WILL GO.
Shemp makes this short even better than the original. A MUST SEE! Shemp's
maze of pipes is a highlight.
DOPEY DICKS (1950)- Another "top" Stooge short. This is an excellent
short. There are many great moments while the Stooges are being chased
thru the mansion. This is the best short here next to VAGABOND LOAFERS and
OUT WEST.
PUNCHY COWPUNCHERS (1950) in a way, is too close to OUT WEST, but I
like this anyway. I must say, this short must have the biggest supporting
cast of all. There are some great moments and punches. This is a gem.
MERRY MAVERICKS (1951) on the other hand is horrible. This is a
horrible remake of PHONY EXPRESS, which I wasn't fond of in the first
place. Edward Bernds is usually a great director. Here, he makes the worst
effort ever. This is quite possibly Shemp's worst.
A great DVD, worth adding to your collection. ... Read more

A history of
the Three Stooges This disc contains four classic Stooges shorts --
"Brideless Groom," "Disorder in the Court," "Sing a Song of Six Pants" and
"Malice in the Palace" (all of which are in the public domain) -- and 8
others that were done before the Columbia era and feature either one
Stooge or the Stooges with Ted Healy, who they worked with in their early
days. The Columbia shorts are great, especially "Disorder," a classic
Curly short (the other three are Shemp). Those who aren't familiar with
their early work will find some interesting stuff here, including several
routines that popped up later in the Columbia shorts. The quality on all
is as good as can be expected. But be aware that, since most of these
aren't the classic Columbia shorts, the Stooges, as seen here, are in
slightly different form from the familiar versions that came later. Still,
from a historical standpoint, this disc is invaluable, as several of these
shorts aren't available in complete form on DVD elsewhere, to my
knowledge. Other than the fact that "Nertsery Rhymes" is b/w instead of
color (as it was originally released), this disc is recommended for
Stooges fans who are interested in the team's history and their early
work. Another nice thing: It's over 3 1/2 hours long, so it's a nice value
for the price.
The Three
Stooges. The Early Years. This DVD is great value for the price.Even
more worthwhile if your interested in film history. Four of these
shorts are well known classics featuring either Curly or Shemp Howard as
the third Stooge. Some of the other shorts on this disc feature members
of the Three Stooges in solo film before they came together as a
team. A couple feature the full Stooges line-up with Ted Healy. I
find the Ted Healy stuff very poor quality, but interesting if you are
interested in seeing how their early vaudeville performance would have
been like on stage.
poor quality
made up by rarities Buy this if you are interested in Ted Healy's
productions from really early Stooge days. If not, skip it. The quality
(audio and video) of the DVD is shabby...hence, the low price. There are
only 4 of 12 shorts really worth owning, available on other, higher
quality products. ... Read more

GO Go CURLY
JOE DERITA This DVD is the WIDESCREEN transfer> It features: A
FEMALE CATFIGHT, Curly Joe in a BIKINI TOP, politically incorrect native
Americans, a nod to The Beatles, and Curly Joe and Larry having fun with
semi-naked SLEEPING SHOWGIRLS. What more can you ask for, other than a
Curly short featuring some of the same gags (included!).
Baby Boomer
delight! Did you grow up watching the Three Stooges with Sally
Starr? Or Officer Joe Bolton? Were you there for Batmania with Adam West?
How about Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In? If the answer is "yes," THE
OUTLAWS IS COMING! (1965) is for you.
The Stooges' Curly-Joe era gets a bad rap, but I think it's unfair, as
demonstrated by this fun & funny western starrring Moe Howard, Larry
Fine, Joe DeRita, Adam West (BATMAN), Nancy Kovack, Henry Gibson
(LAUGH-IN), Emil Sitka, Don Lamond (Larry's son-in-law), Mort Mills... and
a group of children's show hosts from around the US, the same ones we grew
up with, as the OUTLAWS! Despite their ages, the Stooges hilariously
generate an ample amount of slapstick, director Norm Maurer (Moe's
son-in-law) directs in a casual yet narrative style, and veteran Stooge
screenwriter Ellwood Ullman delivers clever & topical gags. Henry
Gibson spoofs the '60s as a hippie native American. And, one year before
he [climbed] to stardom as the Caped Crusader BATMAN, Adam West costars as
the film's hero. For adults, it's a nostalgic trip back. For kids, it's a
fun comedy. For everyone, it's Stooge entertainment!
As a bonus, Columbia throws in the funny western spoof GOOFS AND
SADDLES (1937) starring the original Curly, Curly Howard. ... Read more
